Bank of New York Mellon's CEO Gerald Hassell was fighting for his job in 2015 against two activist investors — Trian, which had taken a board seat, and Marcato, which was publicly calling for his replacement and thousands of layoffs — while defending a costly structural overhaul he argued was about to pay off.
