Alexander & Baldwin to split into 2 publicly traded companies

In December 2011, Alexander & Baldwin's board approved a separation of the 140-year-old Hawaii company into two independent public entities — one holding its real estate and agriculture businesses, the other its shipping arm, Matson. Each emerged with more than $1 billion in assets and roughly a thousand employees, with the split completed in the second half of 2012.
